     About Shimla

Situated in the north-west Himalayas, Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Spread across 12 kms cultivations, Shimla is magnificently robed in dense forests of oak and pine, fur and rhododendron, and it is best to travel here on the slow train from Kalka. Shimla also is a convenient base for variety of adventure sports such as Skiing, Trekking, Fishing and Golfing etc.

The Nepalese call Shimla (it was once part of Nepal), Shyamala, another name of the Hindu goddess Kali. But the Himachal town became an important destination only after the British made it the summer capital of India. From then onwards every summer till 1939, it played host to the British administration, the scene of a hectic social life: balls, bridges and parades.

    Sightseeing

The Mall
Shimla's most sought after place, The Mall Road, runs along the top of the ridge and is one destination each traveler and visitor longs to visit. This is the centre of Shimla's social life. At one end of the Mall road is the "Scandal Point", so named because of a number of romantic rendezvous arranged here. Below this pulsating with life is the Lower Bazaar. On the Ridge of the Mall road you can get majestic views of the Himalayas. Also situated on the Mall is the historic Church, a splendid sight indeed.

Kufri Zoo
The Kufri Zoo at Kufri is a showcase of the wildlife found in the Himalayas. The Himalayan brown bear, The sloth bear, the panther are all there for the visitor to see. A rare snow leopard is also there, though it is to be shifted to the Darjeeling zoo shortly.

Kali Bari Temple
This 150 years old temple houses the deity of Shyamala Devi, from whom Shimla has derived its name. A visit to the temple is a must for all visitors to Shimla.
